IPU Highlighted the Role of the EWF in Addressing Gender Equality Tasks

Liliya Gumerova shares about Russia’s state policy on expansion of women’s participation in science, industry, and social sphere 

At the 139th IPU Assembly held in Geneva (Switzerland), First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture and Member of the Coordination Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union representing the Eurasia geopolitical group Liliya Gumerova told about Russia’s concept and achievements aimed at sustainable development and legal support of women’s activity in all fields of life.

In her speech, Ms. Gumerova highlighted that at the time women’s participation in science and education was one of the priority directions of Russia’s state policy. 

“The world’s share of women involved in science is only 29%. In Russia, the share of women in science is almost 43%”, stressed the senator.

According to Liliya Gumerova, women have stronger positions in education: 57% of professors and lecturers in higher education institutions are women. Women also make up the majority of the administration of universities (53%). 16% of rectors are women. 

Within the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians, the senator shared about the results of the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum in Saint Petersburg. 

The EWF international delegates “concurred on the necessity to strengthen cooperation in the field of joint projects and programmes.” 

In her speech, Ms. Gumerova used the UCMAS international arithmetic championship for girls held within the Forum as an example of such partnership initiatives. 

Development of intelligence of girls and increasing their interest in ‘big’ science are extremely important for their adaptation in the world of digital technologies and successful employment. 

President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barron highly assessed the organisation and content of the events held in Russia (the 137th IPU Assembly and the Second EWF) alongside with quality cooperation of the Federation Council and the IPU, including in the field of promotion of gender equality ideas.
