SOULEF KSAMTINI ON WOMEN IN TUNISIA
In terms of the 137th IPU Assembly in Saint Petersburg, there was an event called the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Women from different countries took part in it. The EWC journalists interviewed Soulef Ksamtini, senator from Tunisia. She willingly shared information about the role of women in her country.
Recently the law on elections to government bodies was put into practice in Tunisia. It helped in increasing the number of women in politics. In addition, the government of Tunisia established quotas with an aim to have 50% of women of the total number of the country’s senators.
According to Soulef Ksamtini, significant changes in women’s situation in her country were introduced after the revolution taking place in 2010-2011. Now women’s rights in Tunisia have been expanded. They actively participate in all fields of activity, contributing to solving topical issues. By the way, Soulef Ksamtini personally took part in the adoption of new constitution after the revolution.
In her opinion, women of Tunisia are strong and self-confident persons. At the same time, they are very sensitive and indifferent to the problems of people around them. According to Soulef Ksamtini, many women want to realize their potential in a certain profession and take a top position. However, the most important thing for them is not money, but an opportunity to help people.
